February 2018 - Lots going on.

Last week I went to my annual Featherweight quilt retreat in SC & got 2 quilt tops done. I used the same pattern but different fabrics. The blue one is for my 87 year old FIL who is recovering from having his hip removed but is finally home from re-hab. Hopefully we'll soon find out if they will be able to put in another hip. I finished it this morning & will gift it to him this afternoon. 

The earth tone one is for me! My friend Jenny found the fabric for me & the squares are made using the 4 patch posey technique. The lines inside are more green than grey. I hope to finish it before fall of next year!

When I got home from SC I went to an Estate Sale that had an original Featherweight table for sale. It is only 31" x 31" & is portable & was reasonably priced. The top is all wood & the metal hardware to hold the machine is very sturdy. I think it's very cute & will keep the FW off my dining table, making room to lay out more quilting projects.

I forgot to mention in my last couple of posts that my niece got engaged, to a really great guy, in early December.

It was a complete surprise as you can see by the photo. No, it wasn't staged. Her BFF (who knew about the engagement) was taking pictures of their group at a plantation they were visiting for the day. She had been taking 'artsy type' photos all morning. She had asked these 2  to stand back to back & take 2 steps before turning partially around. Of course the soon to be groom kneeled instead of taking the steps. The wedding is in November & the planning has begun. We went Wedding dress shopping last Sunday & she found exactly what she wanted. She will be such a beautiful bride.

Featherweight(s) & Christmas Gifts

I just realized that I've never posted about my new obsession - Singer Featherweights. My friend Debbie (THE ENABLER) introduced me to them a couple of years ago. They are the cutest little machines weighing in at about 11 pounds making them the 1st true portable sewing machines. But, what I like best about them is that they are workhorses! I started looking on Craig's List & lo & behold came across a guy selling 2 for a great price last August (2016). I bought them & once I got them home found out that one was made in 1935 & the other in 1950. I stowed them until further notice. Then "The Enabler" decided to host a Featherweight only Retreat this past February so I decided it was time I learned how to use this little gem.

Debbie & another lady taught a session on how to clean, oil & lubricate. I discovered there was a problem with my 1950 but pulled out the 1935 one & it ran just fine. I think it sews so much better than my new (cheaply made) Brother that I bought a few years back. Yes, you have to oil & lube it on occasion but I think it's well worth it. I eventually acquired a 3rd one but I'll post on that later.

While at the FW retreat I decided to go ahead & get a head start on some Christmas gifts. I always plan on making friends small handmade items but always seem to run out of time. I got a few table throw tops made.

These will be quilted & then gifted to former co-workers/girlfriends for Christmas this year. For two of them, I decided to add a few more blocks for a lap quilt for a long time friend who absolutely loves Christmas.

I had started a project several years ago that I am bound & determined to finish this year.

This is one of 3 larger lap tops that I've made (2 for different friends & 1 for me). They are made out of old conference shirts that we all had to wear during shows. 

The shirts were changed out & a new color was introduced for new conferences. They are a heavy twill fabric & very hard to work with. Especially when trying to join seams. I cut up each shirt, then cut them down for piecing the star blocks. I started sewing them on my Brother but finished on the 1935 FW. I sure wish I had that FW when I started these blocks because it sewed through the seams like butter.

I still need to quilt all of these pieces & will start on that next month. We have another retreat coming up at the end of this month & I plan on making a Queen size quilt while there. I'm currently obsessing over fabric choices & placement for that. Will post on that later.

Quilt Retreat 2016 & No Water

Went to our annual quilt retreat last week. It was in Lancaster, same as last year, you can read about the facilities here: 2015 Retreat. I got the same room with a separate entrance & private porch. It worked out great as I had Nelly with me this year. She became our official retreat mascot. A little skittish at first but by the end she had settled in quite nicely & everyone really liked her. Especially because she is so quiet, she would only bark when someone new came around.

Met some new ladies, many of whom are master quilters. Way out of my league but I had a great time anyway. Food, as usual, was excellent. Got to get back on the diet & exercise routine.

I must say my quilting skills are slowly improving. Here are a couple of projects I worked on:

Lap quilt top made w/fabic I had in my stash.

Started on a baby quilt. Plan on putting borders on each square.

More stash fabric. This will be a wall hanging or table topper.

The lady who owns the B&B is so very sweet & kind. Her husband died a few years back, from complications of Alzheimer's. My friend Debbie, who organized the retreat, suggested that we each make a fidget quilt to have Mrs. Catoe give to the local nursing home. A fidget quilt is a lap quilt with many sorts of things sewed on to make it easy for a patient to fidget with. Different fabrics for texture, velcro, zippers, etc. I didn't get mine made until I got home but I finished the 'male' version this morning. Will make another one & get them in the mail to her soon.

Our water pump switch went out last night so we are without water until Greg can get a new switch installed this evening after work. Gotta run to the hardware store. Hope I get the right one!

Quilt Retreat 2014

Earlier this year I took a trip to another quilt retreat in VA. I first stopped at my friends for a couple of nights at their farm (more on it later). She wound up not being able to attend the retreat due to their just getting pregnant ewes so I continued on by myself. Just a few hours drive north to meet up with additional friends.

We were staying at the same house we stayed at last year but they had converted the garage into the sewing room. It was perfect.

On the way, it started sleeting & then snowing. I am from the south & not at all accustomed to driving in that mess. I kept having to stop to scrape my windshield. I also stopped for gas & had to bust away the sleet in the card reader in order to pay! This is what my vehicle looked like the morning after my arrival.

We pretty much stayed in & quilted the week away. One of the ladies attending this time, is a master quilter & actually teaches classes at a nearby shop. Here is a pic of one of her quilts:

Beautiful. I hope to make one of these.

This room was great as it had plenty of table space to work on & house ironing boards & also a railing to hold all our projects.

Here's what I worked on this time:

Bedside table runner. I made 2 of these for the country house.

Chenile throw.

Pillow top (made another one of these after I got home).

Thread catchers.

One of my friends had made & given us all different versions of the above thread catchers. She brought the pattern so I made one each for 2 of my friends from home.

Someone had purchased a special tool for making these swirly table runners.

Actually I think everyone made one.

We also made memory pieces as well. Everyone used materials in a project they had worked on & then 'signed' muslin pieces & sewed them together. Great idea.

I had a great time, I really enjoy spending time with these women. All are great cooks, love to can, are self sufficient, smart, funny & above all else, very nice.

A Quilt Top

I went on an adventure last weekend ... a Quilting Retreat!

I met some wonderful women at the CITR Retreat I went to last year. Like minded individuals who practice what I want to preach. They have their own animals, love to can, dehydrate & generally preserve their own food.  Here's a lovely picture that J took of a quilt top in progress.

Since the CITR Retreat isn't being held as a whole anymore, a few of these women decided to do their own thing & I decided to join them. I have never quilted in my life & didn't get a chance to this time but I did get a quilt top & back built. I was proud of myself considering I haven't even taken my sewing machine out of the box in about 10 years. And, that was for simple curtains for heavens sake. But, one of the ladies posted a beautiful picture of a quilt that I thought I would love to make. My colors weren't the same as what she posted but I had some really cool material I had purchased at an Estate Sale & thought it would work great, and it did!

The retreat was in VA & was associated with a Threads Run Through It Quilt Shop. It is out in the middle of nowhere & was a wonderful place to be for 4 nights & 5 days. They offer a house to rent to do your sewing & is easy access to the shop which has the most amazing fabric choices. The house beds were covered with quilts from the shop & had matching sheets & luxury quality hotel towels to use. Here are a couple of pictures.

I went to my friend's house in SC first & spent the night before heading to VA. She & her husband have a wonderful property located in a rural area & is just beautiful ... the house, grounds & her. In addition to the beautiful & well maintained property, she has several dogs, cats & a couple of horses that she & her husband absolutely adore. It was a pleasure visiting them.

All the women attending were most helpful, patient & kind with the newbie sewer among them. I even learned a few new terms along the way, but messed up a few more. Anybody out there know what a "Fat Quarter" is? I didn't and kept calling it a "Fat Bastard", one of my favorite wines. They got a kick out of it at my expense which was just fine. The lady at the quilt shop (Lori) kept trying to teach me the correct terminology since I was obviously so uninformed.

These women were awesome & very determined in their work. There were 5 of us & three of us all had the same first name (Debbie) which got kind of confusing & humorous as the days went by. Most of them did several projects & all were most beautiful.

Also, there was a very inspiring young lady there who is amazing in her own right. She is the 19 year old daughter of one of the Debbie's & loves all the same things we do. I swear she is a 30 year old in a teenager's body. She made this amazing quilt top which the shop owner quilted for her before we left!

We sewed & sewed but also went on an afternoon trip to a dairy goat farm & then into 'town' to buy T-shirts & then the 19 year old saw a restaurant that she had been for a special birthday celebration recently. It was very very good with Martini's & Cosmopolitan's to boot. The chef/owner had just come back from the coast & had a wonderful grouper dish. Sorry, no pic. Also, had a wonderful coconut cake & key lime pie that was to die for!

Anyway, it was a most enjoyable time away & I am now thinking about what I want to do for next year!
