Crepe Myrtles - Lots of Crepe Myrtles

Last weekend Greg decided to close his business so we could have a whole weekend to plant those crepe myrtles I mentioned in the last Memorial Day post. We drove to the country on Friday afternoon & got up early on Saturday to get started before the heat set in. Here's what we did (click to biggify any of the pics).

A shot of the driveway with black pots placed where 17 of the trees will go.
Trees laid out.
A dingo to dig with - really a muscle saver!

Placing the first hole.

Digging

Digging
Almost done digging 20 minutes later!

We had all 27 holes dug in less than 40 minutes! The soil there is very hard packed & has a ton of clay. Even when it's sort of soft after a rain, it is still very very hard to dig a hole by hand. If we didn't have the Dingo, we would still be digging a week later & probably wouldn't be able to lift our arms.

17 trees in the ground 1 hour later!
A shot back down the driveway.
We only planted 17 because there are still a couple of buildings that will hopefully be brought in before next weekend. To the 17, we added leaves & mulch & a water line & were done around lunch time.

A few more pics taken while the digging was taking place.

Peanut field next door.
Muscadines!
Pecans
4 foot long snake skin in the garden!
The next two pictures are taken down our side of the old driveway where we will be putting in 30 more (smaller) crepe myrtles, 4th of July weekend. We changed the auger bit to a 10" & went ahead & dug the holes while we had the Dingo. 30 holes dug in 30 minutes!

Looking out from the carport.

Looking down the old driveway.
We are gluttons for punishment!

Funny, just had a discussion whether it was crepe myrtles or crape myrtles.

That sure made easy digging and it is going to look beautiful.

DFW,

Now that's what I call getting a job done. Can you imagine doing the planting of your trees by hand? Not me........I need one of those augers for future tree planting!!!

Your place looks so beautiful. The grapes, are they yours? What are your plans to do with them? Will you by chance be making your own wine in the future?

You guys have a beautiful place. Seek the shade...

WOW! I need one of those!

Thank you Gail. I wasn't sure of the spelling either. Word allowed both.

Sandy,

We have a hand held auger but it's heavy & exhaust blows back in your face. Not good for that many holes. We are fortunate to have a friend in the rental business & he loaned this one to us free of charge. I think it's around $250 a day rental!

Thank you, it seems to be coming together, slowly but surely. Yes, the grapes are ours. they are wild that are along the fence line. We put in an arbor last year & were surprised that the little bit of vine that 'caught' is producing. I eat them as fast as I can pick them. But I want to try jelly with them & if they ever produce enough I would love to make some wine!

Stephen,

Thank you.

We are so trying to make shade so we don't have to travel all the way over to the fence line to seek it. Believe me, we consumed a whole bunch of water & gatorade that day!

Mary Ann,

It was a LIFESAVER! It comes with a bunch of other attachments. A front end loader & grappler to name two. Wish we had one for keeps.

WOW! What a tremendous amount you got done! Do we ever need one of those digger thingies. What happens if you should hit a fairly good sized rock?

Mamma Bear said...

Beautiful!....How much longer before you move to your place permanently?

DFW said...

Thanks Mama Pea,

I'm not sure about the rocks. Thank goodness we only have small ones, the largest being 4 or 5 inches which the 30" auger just slung out with all the dirt.

Thank you Mamma Bear,

I'll retire in just under 2 years & will spend a majority of time up there during gardening season. Unless husband can sell his business in the city we'll just wind up having two places. If the opportunity were to come along, both of us would pack up & leave tomorrow.

That's going to be a beautiful drive in! I did notice those flip flops while taking the picture of the snake skin (yuk by the way). We had several run ins with snakes at The Compound in the last year or so, now we each own a pair of snake boots!

Hey Izzy,

Thank you.

If that grass had not been just mowed I wouldn't have dared go in there in my flip flops. Snake boots & a snake venom extractor kit are both on my list!

If I 'have' to work near weeds I do wear my high top rubber boots (I know not the same thing). And, we try to run string trimmer, lawn mower, etc. in the area we'll be working if at all possible.

Ah yes, Georgia clay, you really needed that Dingo! Your driveway will be lovely! I love Crepe Myrtles too!

Thank you Melanie!

Everything is looking fabulous! I'd never heard of a Dingo. We could really use one of those too.

Thank you Leigh.

Wow, you guys whupped up on that job, didn't you? Thanks goodness for the rental place! What color crepes did you plant?

DFW said...

Yes we did! We planted the dark pink but I think there are a couple of peppermint ones that may have gotten mixed in.
