Well, the gardening at the Country House did not go as I had planned for last weekend. But, we got a little bit done. We're trying to do a 40' x 100' (or thereabout) w/raised beds. But, since we aren't at that house all the time, the weeds & grass (especially the Bermuda) takes over! So, I decided to kill a whole plot in one big bed (no photos). This is in addition to the raised beds that we had already started, that now have grass growing all over them (another project for another day)
We got the plot tilled & then started putting newspaper down with the intent to wet it after it was on the ground. However, the wind picked up making it impossible to keep the paper in place. So I filled a 5 gallon bucket w/water & soaked the newspaper before laying it on the ground (down & up & down then down & up & down). Very hard on the lower back. It's times like this that make me realize I'm no spring chicken anymore. Thank goodness it wasn't cold. We then added leaves & horse poo & straw & wet it all down with the sprinker. We got about a 14' x 30' portion of the plot done before we ran out of leaves. We'll just whittle away at is as time & weather allows. I'm not planning on planting anything for a couple of years. Just trying to prepare the soil so that little to no till is needed in the future. Still on the lookout for wood chips to use in the walkways.
And .........
We celebrated our 31st Wedding Anniversary Tuesday! I originally thought this year was going to be 33 years. But, as the date grew nearer it was obvious that is was ONLY 31 years (we got married 11/27/81, the day after Thanksgiving that year).
I am married to an amazing & talented man who can do just about anything he sets his mind to. He's a wonderful cook & he always helps with the cleanup. He can build stuff, fix stuff & he helps me with all my crazy projects. I am lucky to be his wife.

I'm with you girlfriend! Chipping away is the only way we can manage too.
Congrats on the 31 years! Sounds like you made a quite a good catch!
Congratulations on being married for 31 years. I am still a newly wed at only 22 years myself.
We are going to do a couple of things different this year in our gardens. I am not planting the potatoes in towers this year but instead in a huge straw bed, no dirt. Plus we are going to go a big corn patch. The raised beds are great but not for corn, I just cant get enough.
Good luck on yours.
Thanks Izzy. When I finally realize I can't get EVERYTHING done with only weekends to do them, then my stress level decreases.
Thanks MDR. You know, 22 ain't nothing to sneeze at.
I'm going to try to talk my Dad into putting in a field of sweet corn next spring & open pollinated field corn in the summer. I met a new friend that has a grinder & he has a grind party of sorts each year. He makes grits, cornmeal & chicken feed all at one time. There's also a new dairy goat farmer in the 'neighborhood' that I need to meet.
Awww Happy Anniversary!!
Thanks Tonya!
Happy Anniversary!
It's no fun making new beds and Bermuda is hard to get rid of. I fight it all the time.
Thank you Manuela. I hope the beds are done when I am ready to plant in a couple of years. Still trying to talk husband into going ahead & putting in a couple of hugelculture(sp?) beds this winter for spring planting. that way, I'm hoping to have fresh asparagus in 3 years.
Supporting your interests is a very important trait to have in a husband. Mine thought I was being paranoid when I started "talking" about doing a little prepping. This morning I announced I had stayed up late to order an emergency stove that runs on tree leaves and pine cones. He didn't recover for about an hour, but then said he was going outside to look for pine cones. THAT'S love.
Happy Anniversary, so very late! I want to thank you for all the nice comments on Calamity Acres... I really appreciate them, and they keep me going! I hear you when you talk about your back hurting while gardening... I have to take it slow these days!
Happy Anniversary a little late!
Thank you for your kind comment on my blog and for continuing to follow me. I've finally found your blog and am now a follower under my new blog name! I actually left you a note on on my blog on how to follow mine! I look forward to reading your blog and getting to know you through blogger!
Wow, am I ever behind in my blog reading or what! Belated congratulations on your anniversary. 31 years is a treasure to be proud of.
Now that's support! Get him on board a little at a time!
Thanks Mary Ann. I love your blog. And yes, I have to go a little slower these days but I still get it done. I keep thinking that if I just got up & excercised the following morning, I could keep those muscles working & firm.
Thank you, I am learning so much through your blog. I love the new (like minded) people I am meeting in the blogosphere. I'll definitely 'officially' follow you. Thanks.
Happy Anniversary to you both!
Is it possible to ever get rid of all the Bermuda grass in a garden? I fight it too! Your kind comments have lifted me up when I needed it. Thank you friend!
You are very welcome Melanie. We'll have to meet 1/2 way for lunch someday.
