I was very fashionable out by the pit. Perfect night for a fire & just cool enough to need my boots.
We got 2 more strips of the garden prepped. The wind cooperated all morning. We were able to lay all the newspaper, then wet it down, add leaves & horse poo & then topped it off with a thick layer of hay/straw, then water once again.

We had brought leaves from the City which was enough to do one bed, although it was a bit thin but well composted. We then raked pecan & oak leaves from along the fence line & filled the huge trash can & 2 barrels (only took about 30 mintues). This was more than enough to do another strip. The more leaves the better. We also had just enough poop to do that 2nd strip. That makes about 1/2 of the garden done. (I have such a hard time positioning pictures on this blog, I originally had them lined up side by side but that didn't last after I added the captions.)
Since it was such a nice day & still fairly early we went over to my cousins to shovel 2 more barrels of horse poo. He has 3 horses & a barn which makes it very easy to gather the poo. The hardest part is getting the horses to move from the barn opening. They just want to be loved on.
I even got one of the pre-prepared beds outlined in blocks. I was trying to determine how many block would be needed for each one. After a bit of adjusting I've determined it will take 20 blocks per bed (20 block x 20 beds = 400 blocks!). The original goal was to have a 10' x 3' inside planting area. Due to the size of the blocks it wound up being 9' 8" long & 32" wide, which is just fine. This is just a prototype. When we lay them we will have to dig out a bit to make them all level & I will put cardboard under each to help keep the weeds & grass at bay.
MIL & FIL were up working on their little house & they brought about 60 block to use for a temporary project. Once that project is done we will use those blocks in the garden. I've got another 10. That means we only have to find (or buy) 320 more. Whew, my wallet & back is hurting just thinking about it.
Once all the beds are outlined, we will line the pathways with cardboard & cover w/wood chips (once I find a source for the chips).
Enough about gardening .... I'd like to welcome some new followers to my little blog world:
Kelly from http://kellyshappyhollowfarm.blogspot.com/. She's a lovely lady from out west that enjoys things that interest us all.
Red Woman from http://www.red-woman.com/ also decided to join. In her words ... she's "an opinionated woman who speaks her mind". I've been lurking around her blog for a while & am very happy she's joined mine.
Melanie from http://adventuresincountryliving.blogspot.com/. She's not too far from our Country House & we have a lot in common.
Thank you all for joining me on my journey.
Here's my crooked little snowman for the front door from an idea I got from Manuela. You can tell I made those wreaths myself, not at all perfect like the one Manuela posted. He's a lot like me, heavy on the bottom ... lol. Just perfect for our Country House. (Note: Greg wants to get him a proper scarf, to replace the extra ribbon I used.)

bahahahahahaha! i love your heavy-bottomed, crooked snowman! and excellent work on the garden beds....just keep adding poo is my motto! and heck - look at you rockin it and being all fashionable in your boots at the fire! i'll have to take a pic of the boots i wear at the fire for ya....then you'll see just HOW fashionable you really are!
(i normally wear jambaloney's gumboots)
your friend,
kymber
Thanks kymber,
I hope you are feeling better. Can't wait for the boot pics.
Once we get everything straightened out in the beds, I plan on just keep adding poop & leaves since both of those are free for us.
Won't be planting in these beds until Spring 2015 at the earliest. Except for the asparagus hugleculture(sp?) bed which Justin will be building me this winter. Will plant asparagus next spring & hopefully enjoy a small crop the same spring we are planting the big garden.
Thanks for the welcome ☺ I like your snowman!!!
Thank you Kelly!
DFW,
Hey girl, I love a good fire and a glass of wine to relax outside. The fire looks so inviting!
Putting your garden to bed for the winter, just makes you want to start planting again. I can't wait until Spring.
Talking about your wallet and the blocks, try your local Habitat for Humanity store. The stores here have all kinds of building materials that are reasonably priced (not priced like your typical hardware store). We buy from these stores from some of our outside materials. You can also find some inside stuff too.
Hey Sandy,
We love our winter cocktails by the fire. Makes sleeping so nice.
I have a Habitat store near work. I'll check them out in the next week or so. Thanks for the suggestion. I just hope they load on our trailer. I can't take moving them more than twice.
I keep checking them out for windows for an add on greenhouse to the garden shed. I think Justin hates me at times, I just keep adding projects .... but I have visions ;)
DFW~ what a joy it was to receive your comment and get to "meet" you tonight! I love how God uses these blogs to encourage and connect people. Your sweet words were appreciated tonight:)) I look forward to reading your posts as farming is near and dear to my heart! God bless! Terri
Hey DFW--Haha LOVE it!! I am especially envious of the cinder block garden beds. Well the fact that you have them-not the paying or carrying them part, haha.
Seriously it is AWESOME! Fill the empty holes of the cinder blocks with dirt and plant companion herbs or marigolds to act as natural pest deterrents.
Love the snowman idea - thanks for sharing it :)
I think the snowman looks like me! Heavy at the bottom, lol. I'm glad you took the time to enjoy a fire. Nice work on the garden prep.
Yup, we did a little fire sittin and whiskey sippin this weekend too. It sure was good to sit back and relax some.
Thank you for stopping by Terri. I really am moved by your words. Gardening is one of my favorite pastimes.
Thanks Tonya! I hope to buy some heirloom flowers seed this year (instead of just vegetables) and marigolds was definitely one, in addition to geraniums.
You're welcome Dani. Thanks for stopping by.
Thanks Izzy. Yes, the fire was definitely nice. Garden prep hard work but very satisfying.
You relaxed? I'll believe it when I see it.
Cute idea on the snowman how creative. That fire looks warm too:)
I broken into a sweat just reading about your work on the garden...
Thanks Ann. I actually stole the idea from Melanie at Adventures in Country Living & Manuela at a Cultivated Nest.
The fire was great!
It is back breaking work, but as we were talking around the fire that night, it's so satisfying. I guess we are wierd ... hard work makes us happy.
I love your fire pit!!! We too enjoy sitting by the fire pit. I usually have S'Mores and an adult beverage with mine! Nice to sit and watch our "farm TV."
I like horse poo for the gardens too. Works great!
Thank you SweetLand,
You know I think of it as a TV as well. It is quite mesmerizing. Can't beat poo.
Your snowman wreaths looks wonderful (you had me laughing)! Love the fire pit! I can imagine that it's relaxing to sit around it after a hard day of working. I have some extra blocks I'd love to give away :)
Thank you Manuela! From you & your creative self that is a compliment that I will accept.
I'd meet you 1/2 way to get those blocks! And yes, the fire is relaxing.
awesome progress on those beds - i love getting it all ready like that!! we have the time to some garden prep work this winter - you are inspiring, i think i'll start tomorrow!
cheers!
Thank you jambaloney! Now that Justin is on board, we are moving much faster. He said yesterday "hey we could go up a couple of days early, that way we can get that much more done". I came home last night to find that he had bagged up a bunch more composted leaves to take up. That's not a fun job but we have them so why not use them?
I agree, great progress with those beds! I know it's a relief to get that done. My beds need some work too. Maybe after the holidays!
