Friend or Foe?
This guy was in the bushes at the City House. Right where I have to trudge through to turn on the faucet. He's about 3 or 4 foot long & about as big around as a quarter.
In these parts, unless it's a rattlesnake it's a friend. The rattlesnake is the only venomous snake in our parts, and the others are territorial and actually help to keep the rattlesnakes away. Not sure about where you live but hope it's a good guy!
I think it's a common rat snake. He wasn't aggressive at all. We have several different kinds of rattlesnakes, copperheads & cotton mouth mocasins in these parts. But the black snakes seem to keep them away. Hubby came face to face with a pretty big black snake when he was working on the pump a few weeks back. They both jumped. He said it was quite funny to see a snake surprised.
It looks harmless, but I know what you mean about close encounters. I happen to like snakes (there's a Polaroid of me with a garter snake around my neck as a youngster) but they do tend to 'surprise' you.
I consider myself a fairly well-balanced person. ("Fairly" may be the questionable word there.) BUT I do NOT like snakes whether they be poisonous or not. Worms are just about as bad. It's a wonder I can garden because of our plethora of earthworms . . . which I know are indicative of a good, healthy soil, but I still jump back every time I come across one. Not very mature, eh?
A three or four foot long snake would have been my undoing!
I have a story about earth worms that I'll share in a future post. He was just so calm that I ran inside to get my camera. He had moved so I had to find him again. I did it from the perimeter instead of in the actual bushes.

Thanks Tonya. I think this is a non-venemous one but I still don't like to encouter at such close circumstances!

Susan, A close encounter is what I need every now & then to remind me to watch where I'm sticking my arm or stepping.
DFW,
His head is shaped as a non-poisonous. Looks possibly like a corn snake?
Just be careful!
Sandy, I think he's a garter or rat snake. I will!
