Upon arrival it was obvious that a LOT of rain had come down that day. Water was standing everywhere! I have never seen it just standing like that. Plus, it started raining about 9:00 that night & continued until around 10:00 the next morning. We had hoped to get the 1st mowing under our belt but the ground was just too wet. I think it was estimated that we got over 6" in a 24 hour period.
Also, we discovered that the drain field for the septic was flooded as well. Not surprising but left us with no way to flush toilets or take showers. We decided to come on back to the city since we couldn't really accomplish anything, or at least what we wanted to accomplish.
We had hoped that the contractor would be finished with the trim for the apartment but alas, they have just a couple of things left to do. Isn't that what they always say?
We still have a couple of things left to get done as well. Like - install the fridge, dishwasher & stove, kitchen faucet(s), bathroom vanity & faucets as well as a light fixture for the bathroom. All are already purchased except for the bathroom faucet & light. We have all the shelving for the pantry, just need to get some hardware to put it together. That was one of my big bargains last year. We also have to get a separate septic tank put in because the one for the house is too far away. It's always something.
This is in a metal building we had built in Dec. 2014. It is divided into 2 sections - an apartment in the front & my Greg's shop & office in the back. Took a few pics to show our progress so far:

The contractors wife had thinned her amaryllis & daylilly beds & gifted me with about 75 amaryllis & 25 or so daylillies. Guess what I did Sunday?
I put about 40 or 50 in various pots on our patio & gave the rest to a neighbor & my MIL.

I won't be going back to the country until the end of the month as I have my annual Quilt Retreat to attend in a couple of weeks. Spending most of my time these getting projects ready for that. And yes, Nelly will be going with me. She's a travelling dog.

Your place is really coming along beautifully. Never experienced a leach field underwater, and here in CA it's not likely to happen (but I'd still love to see 6 inches of rain). Glad you have another place to go to when that happens...perhaps you could get a self-contained, composting toilet for emergencies?
We are intending in putting in some french drains near the top of the property to hopefully divert some of the many inches of water that settled in various places, including the drain field. This happened once before where we couldn't flush but it only lasted about 30 minutes & while it was raining, this time it probably went down within a 48 hours period. Regardless, if we are living there & it happens again we have plenty of people in the area that would accommodate bathroom facilities for us, tather than driving 3 hours back to the city.
That is some nice apartment! It looks huge! You really have gotten the rain - and now we are getting snow. The climate is so screwy. Don't you love gifted plants? I am nursing along five geraniums that I got on Freecycle - they were already potted with bat guano! Now, that's something you don't find every day. Hope the soil absorbs all that water and you get to your mowing before it's up to your knees.
Susan, Unfortunately the grass/weeds are already up to our knees. It should have been mowed 3 or 4 weeks ago! It's rained every weekend we've been there. Yes, I love gifted plants! It's gotten to the point where I won't buy any more. Many of the Amaryllis are blooming. I'll have to take a few pics this weekend.
DFW,
I love the apartment/shop situation. We would call this a Shouse in this neck of the woods. Hubby and I want to build a shouse in our future on some property.
It sounds to me you'll need to wait a while before cutting the grass. One year I had to cut the grass in levels because it rained day in and day out. The grass was too long. Talk about all kinds of work and a mess of wet grass.
Be careful when you do get to go back and cut that grass, snakes love wet grass.
Thank you Sandy. So glad it has a name. We love the Shouse. It will most likely be where wind up living after full retirement. Maybe rent out the 2.5 bedroom house for extra income? We'll see. I'll definitely keep my eyes out for snakes. Glad we've got riding mowers & I'd hate to kill a 'good' one (mainly king snakes).
Sounds as though your spring weather could be behaving better also! Sorry you couldn't accomplish as much as you wanted on this recent trip. By the end of the month, hopefully Mother Nature will have decided to give us both more favorable weather for all those waiting outside chores!
On a "new" piece of property, there are always surprises one finds (such as a need for drainage in certain spots) as you get to know the place. I think you two are doing this transition very wisely . . . living in your totally set up place while getting this new one ready. Plus, you'll have most of your garden space and landscaping done when you make the move!
Mama Pea,
Still have lots of landscaping & more trees to plant. But ... it will all get done in due time, weather permitting of course.
DFW - when i told you we were moving into your barn (shouse), i didn't mean for you to make it so elaborately beautiful but i sure do appreciate it - bahhaha!
sending love! your friend,
kymber
Kymber,
I wouldn't have you stay in anything less!
Looking good! And what a flower garden you will have!
Thank you Leigh!
