We had been collecting plants for a few weeks & this weekend was the time to get her landscaping done. She never had many plants around the old home & it always looked a bit barren. We had some plants that we started & several we bought. The only thing she requested was azaleas. Here's what we installed today:
Purchased:
10 azaleas
1 plant with purple flowers that I can't recall the name, but is supposed to get large.
2 blueberry
2 crepe myrtle
12 aztec grass
8 daylillies (sister's)
4 lavendar
4 lorapetalum
Grown from starts:
1 camelia (sister's)
1 gardenia
3 hydranga's
2 sago palms
5 pine trees (sprigs received from Greenscape)
What a beautiful day to work. High in the 60s with bright sunshine. She & my Sister live in a small town about an hours drive from our city house. We got started around 11:00 & it took 4 of us about 6 hours to complete it all.
In addition to the plants, leaves & mulch, hubby put down 3 landing pads in pavers (leftover from front walkway in city). 2 for the stairs into the house (front & back) & 1 for the trashcan which her young neighbors kindly take to the curb for her.
We are most worried about her being able to take the 50' hoses off the hose racks & get them rolled back up. They are not the most expensive hoses & not very cooperative. We will see how she does w/those.
We are back at the city house & will be working with plants once again today. We grafted some lorapetalum & camelia's last summer. We'll be cutting them & putting in pots today & hopefully get those planted at the country house this fall. It's going to be another beautiful day with highs in the mid 60s. Got to get out there & get yard work done before we hit our normal hot & humid days in the 90s. Miserable conditions to work in for sure.

Lookin good though nice work!!!
Thanks PP.
DFW,
Beautiful......just beautiful!!!! I'm sure your Mom was totally surprised.
Speaking of heavy uncooperative hoses, my Mom (last year before she got sick) bought one of those hoses that crinkle up to a small ball. She hooked it up to the outside faucet, it expands to the size of a big hose, much lighter to carry/move around to water plants. Mom is 73, she has a hard time lifting things, this hose really worked wonders for her. I believe she picked it up at Wal-Mart, the cost was about $19.99. The hose comes in real bright neon colors. This may hose may make it easier for your Mom to use (just a thought).
Nice job, give it a few months and those plants will really take off. That was a lot of work, but isn't it nice to come home to a place with a little bit of Mother Nature tucked in it's corners?
Thanks Sandy. We discussed those but she has a niece that bought one & it didn't work for her. For $20, it may be worth a shot though.
Thanks Izzy. It was a lot of work but with 4 people it wasn't too bad.
What thoughtful daughters you are! It looks so nice - I bet she gets years of pleasure as all that lovely landscaping grows in and flourishes. The inside is lovely!
DFW - the landscaping looks great - you guys did a wonderful and thoughtful job! i love the colours in the living room and that floor is to die for! we're still buried under about a foot of snow...we are crazy for spring to finally get to us!
much love to you and yours! your friend,
kymber
Thanks Susan. It is a labor of love.
Thank you Kymber. The floor is laminate & very easy to care for, it holds up very well. I know you're ready for Spring!
Your mother is so blessed to have such good care taken of herself and her new home. What a lovely looking little place it is. I hope she spends many happy years there.
DFW - how does the floor hold up to pet hair? we had blonde floors in our old house and they were pretty good about hiding pet hair, dirt and crap. i love the look of your mom's floor but am worried that every little speck of dust will be noticed due to the deep colour. how does your mom and sister find the floors in regards to showing dirt/dust?
Kymber, that is a downfall of dark floors, it does show the dust/sand. But my Mom likes that, she can see when she needs to sweep. The house is very small (< 500 sq. ft.) so it only takes her a few minutes to go over the living room, dining room & kitchen. She has carpet in the bedroom.
Thank you Mama Pea!
thanks DFW - with 3 hair-shedding cats that floor is not for me. doesn't matter that i still love it!
What a wonderful list of plants! Your mom's place is going to be so pretty when it all gets planted and growing. I love that. Good job on ya'll's part!
Thanks Leigh!
