This past week, I was in Hartford, CT on a business trip. Had a bit of sleet & snow & of course, cold. Everyone up there is pinning for Spring very badly. I'll admit the snow in the woods & parks was beautiful but I wouldn't want it in my backyard in March either!
While there, I took the opportunity to visit Comstock Ferre Seed Company in Wethersfield, CT.
They are a very old company (selling seeds since 1820) and were purchased by Baker Creek a few years back. It's so nice to go in there & just browse.
Wouldn't you love a couple of those seed bins? |
Overall, had a great meetings with happy clients, nice dinners w/my travel companion & travel wasn't a hassle.
After getting home late & realizing that I had not asked Greg to water my veggie plants, so I watered them at midnight & then not getting to bed until around 1:30p this morning, I decided to stay home today. After the morning conference calls, what to do, what to do? Experiment with more bread making!
I purchased a Pullman Loaf Pan last year but was too intimidated to use it.
This pan makes a uniformly shaped sandwich bread so I decided to try a recipe today.
Bread cooked. |
Out to cool. |
I also gained another follower while I was gone. Cherie Campbell decided to hit my follower button. Cherie, it doesn't appear that you have a blog, but if I am mistaken, please let me know.
Glad to be home! Tomorrow we are headed to St. Augustine to purchase a few vegetables at our favorite produce stand ... County Line Produce, just outside of St. Aug. & then off to the farmers market at the Ampitheatre & last but not least a bit of lunch at our newest favorite restaurant - Gas Full Service (no website, FB only). They serve only local food (meat & produce) & are excellent!
Expecting rain this weekend. Plan to catch up on blogs while it's raining on Sunday.

Awww I'm so jealous! I ordered my seeds from there this year! We should trade when we meet up!
Cool! I'm really jealous too!!!! I bet that place was neat!
Your bread looks great! I like your bread pan too!
Sounds like you had a great trip! It must have been fun looking around in that store!! Your bread looks good! Your trip to St. Augustine sounds like it will be fun!!
Let's definitely make it a date after Easter!
Thanks Kelly. I love places like that. I hope the bread turns out good.
Thanks Melanie! Love that store. I'll post on what we wind up with.
Wait, Jerre Gettle bought Comstock Ferre and there "is very little for sale?" What the heck? I notice most of those seeds in the picture are Baker Creek packaging!
Mary Ann,
It was like that last year when I went there as well. I don't think they re-supply until March. You're right most are Baker Creek. I bought some flowers this time. Not even sure if Hollyhocks grow here in the south, but I'm going to try anyway!
DFW,
OMG.....Baker Creek Seeds, I love their seeds. One day, I will visit their store.
I would kill to have all of those drawers full of heirloom seeds. It sounds like you really enjoyed your trip to Connecticut. I notice you travel alot with work, if you don't mind me asking what is it that you do for work? Please let us know about your bread being baked in the Pullman pan, I'm interested in knowing more.
Sandy,
I'm a Director for customer service at a software company. I used to travel a LOT (at least once or twice a month), not so much nowadays. I have 1 more trip planned in the next few weeks, then I'm turning the rest over to 2 of my employees.
The bread turned out wonderful. Much more of a store bought sandwich texture. Don't know if it was the recipe or the pan;)
It sounds like the company keeps you extremely busy. I was just curious because several of your blog posts in the past mentioned you travel for work.
It's probably your recipe that made the bread wonderful.
Sandy,
Yes, my work keeps me busy. Mainly w/stuff I don't want to be busy with these day - lol. I'll definitely make this bread recipe again. Even if it only turns out croutons.
O, you got to visit Comstock Ferre Seed Company! Lucky you.
The bread pan is interesting, I've never seen anything like it. But who wouldn't want perfectly shaped bread for sandwiches?
That store is so warm & inviting. We had grilled cheese with the bread last night & it is so good. I'm hoping to make another loaf this weekend & will freeze it to see how that works out.
If your bread slices easily and holds up against mayonnaise and tomato, could you PLEASE print your recipe?
Here is the link for the home baked sandwich bread (2nd recipe):

YAY. On my way dear lady!
Let me know how it turns out!
It is good to get heritage seeds. Some of these hybrids scare me just a little. At least with heritage you can save your own seeds and know what you're getting.
Thank you for your emotional and prayer support.
I totally agree on the heritage seeds. I'm just getting started on learning how to save them. Tomato & sweet pepper tests this year. Next is broccoli & Chinese cabbage.
Continued prayers sent your way.
