We arrived at the Country House Saturday around noon. Looked out at the garden & said "What the ..?".
From the house it looked like very large Dandelions had sprouted over several of the beds.
Upon closer inspection I realized it was newspaper, wet newspaper.
A few weekends ago I had stuffed newspaper in the concrete block holes in four of the beds. I had hoped the newspaper would help with the weeds. I'm planning on adding leaf compost on top of the paper, eventually. Hopefully before the weeds start to spring free.
But someone had come behind me & pulled up all the newspaper, out . of . all . four . beds. What the ...?
Upon closer inspection I see in the bottom of one of the holes, a cigarette butt. Why would someone pull up all that newspaper I had taken about 3 hours to painstakingly crush and put into each . and . every . blasted hole?
What had I done to anger someone so?
Upon even closer inspection I realized it wasn't a cigarette butt after all ....... It was Goose Poop!
Geese come and go all year long & apparently they thought there Must Be Something Good underneath all that paper.
Geesh, if it isn't the Beavers, it's the Geese. I stuffed it all back in, hoping they realize there isn't anything underneath & leave it alone.
Daggum Geese!

Listen, pretty lady, I've a couple spare shotguns just biding time in my safe. Couple boxes of number four shot and the two of you can put an end to this mess. Just remember, get 'em plucked and gutted pronto. Then turn around and stuff them deep into the freezer. I'll take one for the cost of the shotgun loan.
ReplyDeleteBelieve me, that will be the plan next time! Just wish I was up there to catch them.
ReplyDeleteHa Ha....you had me goin...that is funny I would have thought the same way. sorry to hear but glad you solved the case of the Newsy Goose!
ReplyDeleteThanks M.E. Love the Newsy Goose(s).
DeleteI'm glad it was a goose and not a nasty neighbor! You wouldn't dare shoot a neighbor ;-)
ReplyDeleteMe too Granny!
DeleteOh, it angered me to thing punks did this. I'm relieved to know it wasn't vandals......But who pulled the cigarette out to discover it was poop?
ReplyDeleteI just looked a little closer. Plus after I spotted it in the hole I started noticing that it was everywhere. Hey, free fertilizer!
DeleteI can envision lots of marigolds growing from the openings in the concrete blocks full of fertilizer. lol
DeleteGarden helpers aren't always that...
ReplyDeleteWhatcha gonna plant in the beds? Will you need bird netting?
I'm going to plant various vegies & rotate them, eventually. I'm in prep & kill weed mode this year.
DeleteDFW,
ReplyDeleteI can see some geese roasting on your outside grill right about now :-)
Geese are very nosey, and will probably come back now that they know you have
delicious snacks, lol
Sandy, We will eventually fence most of the whole garden & I hope that keeps them away. Crossing fingers!
DeleteOh bother! I'm glad they don't come down this far, we have enough issues with the Egrets! Glad it wasn't anything too serious.
ReplyDeleteThey are very messy. Glad they are migratory & don't stay all year long!
DeleteOh my gosh! I, too, am very glad it wasn't vandals (as in the human kind). That would have made me madder than hops. Geese are just about the most destructive fowl around. Ours used to regularly pull on bungee cords holding doors shut, cans on feed cans, etc. In short order anything they could get their hands (I mean beaks) on was destroyed. I wonder how many of them it took to pull all that newspaper stuffing out? How will you keep them from landing in the garden even when you have it fenced??
ReplyDeleteMama Pea,
DeleteI knew they were messy but didn't know they were that inquisitive. I've only ever seen them land in large fields or on water. They swoop in & I'm hoping my garden area isn't enough for them to 'swoop'. Fingers crossed. At least by the time I'm ready to plant, I should be spending much more time up there.
I bet that would have been fascinating to watch - unless you were the one who had to put all that newspaper back....
ReplyDeleteSusan, My husband & I both said the same thing, I would have loved to know how many there were that did it. At least the paper was wet & it went back in much quicker than when I originally put it in.
Deleteoh LOL< I know, not funny but still, it is! This is something the goats would do to me here on my farm!
ReplyDeleteI don't mean to laugh, but.............snort.
ReplyDeleteMM & SFG ... I actually laughed about it too. Wish I had seen them doing it!
ReplyDeleteLOL! Sorry, I know it wasn't funny at the time but you wrote that so well. I'm learning too that animals and gardens don't mix!
ReplyDeleteLeigh, that's becoming all too apparent in my world. Live & learn!
DeleteI'm FINALLY getting the seeds from my "Seed Swap" mailed this week, but I lost your mailing address! Would you kindly send me your address (and seed list) to carolynrenee at centurytel dot net.....sorry :)
ReplyDeleteI just saw this and I have to say, it made my night. SO funny. Amazing that we sometimes assume human interference, forgetting just how destructive our animal friends can be.
